Remember that over the holiday break you should be reading
The Kite Runner in preparation for Terry Haynes' discussion in the spring. Prof. Haynes has also asked that you complete the following writing activity before his presentation, which will take place early in the semester.

The Kite Runner: Individual Writing Assignment
Do one of the
following two writing assignments (A or B) connected with the book. You may
choose which assignment of the two you choose to complete.
A) In an essay of from
500 to 750 words, discuss, in writing, which scene in the book "The Kite Runner"
is the most powerful, meaningful, or memorable scene / passage for you. Why do you select the
scene / passage which you have chosen? What
does this scene / passage reveal which makes it so significant? How important to the
complete message of the book is the passage you chose? Why? Explain your
selection by analyzing the scene / passage in detail and commenting upon what
role it plays in importance to the book as a whole. Select a scene or
passage which is anywhere from (approximately) 100 to 1,500 words in
length, and paraphrase, summarize, and / or quote when necessary. Do not include the
entire text of the passage you select in your paper, but make clear references
to it by use of summary and paraphrase. Use official, 2009-standard MLA format
in your written response (including heading, works cited page, and
parenthetical citations). Please bring your completed, typed response to our
meeting.
OR
B) The "theme" of
a novel can be defined as the underlying "message"
or "main point" which the work presents and tries to
communicate to the reader. In 500-750 words, what, in your opinion, is the theme of the book
"The Kite Runner?"
Explain your answer clearly, making at least three specific
references to the text. Use official, 2009-standard MLA format in your written
response (including heading, works cited pages, and parenthetical citations).
Please bring your completed, typed response to our meeting.
